Jazzfest Berlin 2006

As every year in November, Jazzfest time is in Berlin. This years edition show again the variety of jazz and the global importance for the present music scene.

In many ways an exciting programme Peter Schulze and his 'Berliner Festspiele' team could present in 2006:

Last year all the invited musicians dedicated their shows to the "Birth of Jazz" city New Orleans, that was devastated two months before by hurricane Katrina. But no artist from the US south metropole was performing, that will be make up this year. Artists like Allen Toussaint, Eddie Bo or the New Birth Brass Band will appear this time and the documentation film "New Orleans Music in Exile" from director Robert Mugge supply an impressive evidence of the occasions.

Jazz and movies are a focus this year. Right at the opening of the festival on November, 1st, 2006, Julian Benedikt's film "Play Your Own Thing" got his world premiere. Interviews and video clips documents the development of jazz in Europe from its beginning to its emancipation and originality.

A further cinematographic highlight will be the presentation of the silent movie "De Jazz Van Het Bankroet", produced already in 1919 in Europe (also in Berlin). The film is not only a historic reconstruction, but also a great instruction for a grotesque as a way for coping with the difficulties of present times. Parallel to the "dada-istic" picture, German saxophonist Stephan-Max Wirth show his music to the movie the first time and members of the "Kieler" ballett dance to animations of video artist Michael Carstens.
