BERLIN JAZZFEST EDITION 2005

jazzfest2005.jpgThis year's Berlin jazzfestival will serve an excellent programme, which will lighten up the present music scenes of Turkey and Italy as the main focus of the festival. Peter Schulze, the artistic director had a lot of fun to look around Istanbul's lively pulse beat.

Years ago the ambitious music journalist lived in this metropole and he met again musicians and friends. Nearly every day a new music club opens (like for instance at present in the district Beyoglu the jazz club Nardis). The scene is unbelievable multilayered. Istanbul today is the most exciting city for music in Europe. He invited the great violonist Turay Dinleyen and master guitarist Erkan Ogur, who will perform together with Belgian guitar master Philip Catherine.

Italy forms the second focus this year. The son of legendary trumpeter Pino Minafra plays a solo concert. Livio Minafra grib smart treatments of music from the middle age to the modern age on the piano.

Charlie Haden & His Liberation Orchestra will share the stage wih arranger Carla Bley. Further Highlights are surely concerts from Bill Frisell and his trio, the Brazilian multi instrumentalist Hermeto Pascoal together with drummer Han Bennink, the WDR Big Band featuring Joe Zawinul and his group, the Orchestra of Maria Schneider, the Berlin based band Baby Bonk around the finnish guitarist Kalle Kalima and the Danish formation from saxophonist Fredrik Lundin, who will put on a jazz programme of blues classics from composer Leadbelly. Clifford Jordan once released an album on Atlantic Records in the Sixties with his quartet and with arrangements of Leadbelly songs. Lundin rearranged this music for a big band set and will inspire the audience on Saturday, November 5th.
